Jeremy Barlow & Travis Hanson on Making Comics #10 (Part 1)

In this episode we have Jeremy Barlow, writer of many comics and graphic novels for Dark Horse including, Dethklok, Kult, Mass Effect, Metalocalypse, Savage Sword, and many Star Wars books as well. Also on the call is Travis Hanson of the Eisner nominated webcomic The Bean. We discuss making our own comics vs. doing it for the big publishers. What keeps a webcomic alive and well, how someone should go about starting a new webcomic and what makes for amazing fan interaction, online vs. print comics and we even give our thoughts on what makes a Kickstarter campaign a success. Just so you know, Travis Hanson has had 2 very successful Kickstarter campaigns with The Bean and Jason Brubaker (also on the call) has had a successful Kickstarter campaign with reMIND.

This is part 1 of 2.

  1. I’m listening to the blog right now as I’m writing this and enjoying all of the useful information being shared amongst you and your guests. I, myself am trying my hardest to push forward to get my own title out there. My main problem has been the day-job, which can be particularly draining at the end of the day. I’ve actually taken to recording notes on my iphone just to make sure if I don’t pick up a pen that day, I at least have contributed something to the story. I have a site that I display my art on, but I’m so terrible at updating it. However I will not give up. It’s what I want to do. To share my stories with an audience, and hopefully they like it. Your blog is quite inspirational and check quite often for the latest one. Keep up the great work, Jason. I love hearing your blog.

  2. Very inspirational guys! I was feeling kinda down about my web comic and I was reminded why I’m doing it and that I need to keep doing it even when it’s tough. Feel free to check it out and let me know what you think, it’s a lot hard than I thought to get good feedback. http://www.dedfordtales.com :)

  3. Thanks Jason and Daniel. This is some great information. I’ve been waiting to hear what Travis Hanson had to say about his successful Kickstarter and what it takes to do a webcomic. Thanks for keeping it real! Yeh..and what about that Order of Stick guy!…lol.

  4. Thanks everyone! It’s good to know that people like this stuff. It keeps me motivated to keep doing it. :) I’ll try to get the next part up on Monday if I can finish doing my taxes. :(

I also have a few other recording sessions planned very soon. More great guests and subject matter in the near future.

  5. Great hearing about the industry from the pros I knows!
Will def check out Bean (Already on it on another screen in fact) Wish we had a comic shop here but thanks to the web we do have options at least!

  6. another great episode
gonna’ run over and listen to the next part.

i agree that you can’t approach making comics as a hobbiest.
that was something i had to learn when i first started self publishing in 98.
i didn’t start thinking about it differently until 2006, but in all that time while travelling across the country doing conventions and selling comics, i was learning and growing.
