I suddenly feel really thankful that I don’t get ideas in the shower. It would be tricky writing them down in there. Interesting solutions, though. I really enjoyed that part :D
Here’s a solution!
Waterproof notebook
I guess now that I think about it, I get ideas in the shower too and then I rush out to write it down afterwords. But it’s rare. :)
I’m a shower thinker, too. Generally I run down to google docs right after if I have to get something down.
Regarding the “payoff” argument. I agree with Jason in that I think there’s too much emphasis on it. You can ruin a page by forcing in a joke or something that doesn’t need to be there. If the arc itself is compelling, then people will read, I think.
I also think that a “payoff” can be many things. If I am getting high quality content from an artist that is a pleasure to take in, I don’t mind at all. I’m willing to wait for said payoff. It’s more about am I being entertained.
Great podcast guys.
Great point about the art in itself being a payoff.
Brilliant episode, was fun hearing from from David Petersen. :) I’d jump right on any web project he did.
I stopped drawing and trying to make comics ages ago to devote myself to 3d animation for tv commercials. I’m trying to apply my experience in actual production environments to creating a comic, which, as said in the ‘cast, will be it’s own payoff. Thank you for mentioning that just in the moment where a cloud of doubt passed over me!
Awesome show! Really interesting stuff, now I’m going to start listening to the archive!
Jeff
I’ve heard a screenwriter refer to himself not as an “outline person” but as a “shower person”. You’re not alone, Peterson!
Once again a truly mind-expanding comics podcast that made me think of new ways and approaches. Thank you, Jason!
